ELEANOR HOLMES NORTON

LEGACY FUND

OUR GOALS

The EHNLF Mission: The Eleanor Holmes Norton Legacy Fund (EHNLF) was established in 2018 by the DC Federation of Democratic Women as an independent, nonprofit 501 (c) (3) organization:

1) To provide scholarships to female students doing graduate study in public policy or studying public interest law at the University of the District of Columbia David Clarke School of Law; and

2) Who embody the passion, determination and commitment to public service as embodied by DC’s own “Warrior on the Hill,” Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton.

Statement Of Congresswoman Norton at the 2021 Scholarship Awards Presentation

Thank you for the great honor of having the Fund named for me. Nothing could mean more to me. When I consider what you are doing for young women from our UDC School of Law, particularly at a time like this, at this moment in time, we are celebrating!

This has been a tough year, particularly for young women struggling to get an education. Women are the first to have to take on new responsibilities. I am certain that’s been the case for many women, trying to get through their higher education.

As a woman who attended law school when few women attended, I appreciate that the Fund awards scholarships to our UDC Law School. It’s tough going to college. But to make the decision to go to law school in an environment like this, your support could not mean more. As the District’s representative in Congress, I appreciate that you allow this scholarship to go to people in various public policy disciplines. We are on the brink of a new day for the District of Columbia. Polls show 54% of Americans support making the District the 51st state.

Thank you very much for the generosity of the DC Federation of Democratic Women and what the Eleanor Holmes Norton Legacy Scholarship Fund is doing for young women in the District of Columbia.

Our Mission

Our mission is to help engender the next generation of community leaders and political activists and political leaders committed to public service in the District of Columbia.

Message from the EHNLF President

It is my pleasure to greet you on behalf of the Board and members of the Eleanor Holmes Norton Legacy Scholarship Fund (EHNLF). The D.C. Federation of Democratic Women (DCFDW) established the Eleanor Holmes Norton Legacy Fund (EHNLF) in 2018, to award scholarships to students who demonstrated the passion, determination and commitment to public service as embodied by Congresswoman Norton, our “Warrior on the Hill.” We are grateful to our donors, members and contributors for their commitment to our shared mission of lifting up the next generation of activists, advocates and political leaders.

The impetus for the EHNLF Scholarship Fund is twofold: 1) to invest in the education of young women who carry on the Congresswoman’s legacy of dedication to public service and public policy law; and 2) to contribute to the pipeline of qualified Washington women who have demonstrated their commitment by becoming the political and community leaders of today and the future.

In the scholarship recipients we see young women who are daring to imagine the world as it can be and who are taking the initiative to act on that vision. By focusing on their education, working to help their communities, our recipients take the lead to improve the future they will create. We applaud the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law for nurturing, inspiring and shaping the talent and scholarship of these students. We thank UDC Law for planting the seeds of excellence in those who will carry Congresswoman Norton’s legacy into the future.

We thank our donors for moving EHNL Scholarship Fund forward to assist an increasing number of students. Nothing gives us more hope than knowing that working in concert, the best is yet to come.

Best regards,

The Eleanor Holmes Norton Legacy Fund Celebrates Women’s History Month

THEME: “Our History is Our Legacy”

The Eleanor Holmes Norton Legacy Fund (EHNLF) celebrated Women’s History Month by hosting its 3rd Annual EHNLF Scholarship Awards Presentation on March 31, 2021. The virtual event celebrated Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton as our stalwart, relentless – often singular – “Warrior on the Hill” as it also celebrated three talented students from the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law who exemplified resilience, tenacity and commitment to public service as modeled by Congresswoman Norton.

Scholarships based on academic excellence and need were presented to Kadian Keneisha Townsend, Gloria Rose Cannon, and Darby Hickey, all students at UDC Law. This year, assistance was even more pressing as working students and families struggled with the economic hardships stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.

EHNLF awards were presented to Platinum and Gold sponsors, A. Scott Bolden, Esq., ReedSmith LLP; and Emmanuel Bailey, DC09, respectively. Also, for the first time this year, “Wind Beneath Our Wings” awards were presented to four major donors: Joseph L. Davis, The Living Capital Group; Eric Holland, Holland Enterprises, LLP; Pierpoint Mobley, JPM Consulting Group; and Frank Wilds, Metropolitan Service and Maintenance Corp.

As stated by EHNLF president Hazel Bland Thomas, the theme, “Our History is Our Legacy,” reminds us that “we are creating history every day by investing in the students who are building on Congresswoman Norton’s legacy as an activist, community leader, and advocate.”

The Eleanor Holmes Norton Legacy Fund is a 501c3 nonprofit organization established by the D.C. Federation of Democratic Women in 2018 to provide graduate and law school scholarships to District of Columbia women who “demonstrate the passion, determination, and commitment to public service,” as embodied by Congresswoman Norton. Scholarships this year were presented to Awards Recipients: Kadian Keneisha Townsend, Gloria Rose Cannon and Darby Hickey.

STATEMENT FOF DEAN RENÉE HUTCHINS, DEAN AND RAUH CHAIR OF PUBLIC INTEREST LAW

“UDC Law is one of six HBCU law schools in the country and has a historic access mission. Our goal is to ensure that the pathway to the legal profession is accessible to all, particularly those who have traditionally been underrepresented at the bar. Though we work to keep our tuition among the lowest of any ABA-approved law school in the country, many of our students nonetheless face financial barriers to completing their legal education. The EHN Scholarship helps to address this need through its annual award of generous scholarships to three UDC Law students. We are deeply grateful to the Scholarship Fund and its demonstrated support of the District of Columbia’s only public law school and the phenomenal students we educate.” We look forward to our continued partnership with the Eleanor Homes Norton Legacy Fund.
